Sculptures
Each sculpture I create is an original, one-of-a-kind piece. I sculpt using only traditional hand tools, i.e. carver’s gouges and knives, axes, chisels, rasps, vastringues, scrapers…etc. The only power tools I use (band saws, chain saws) are for the wood preparation and roughing stages.
The woods I use are mainly European and sometimes exotic: cherry, lime, apple, walnut, oak, beech, alder, iroko. Wood with interesting dimensions for sculpture is not always easy to find. When I find it at a dealer’s, I try to find out as much as possible about its origin. However, I prefer to find pieces that have a more specific history, such as a stock from an old turner in the Jura, a neighbor’s tree that fell during a storm, a piece from the framework of my wife’s old nursery school, or even a fine piece found in my father’s firewood.
On each sculpture I apply an oiled finish, which nourishes, protects and reveals all the beauty of the wood. Some pieces also receive a coat of beeswax or carnauba wax, which adds shine.
